How to convert degrees Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit
To change degrees Celsius into degrees Fahrenheit: multiply by 1.8, then add 32.
degrees Fahrenheit = degrees Celsius × 1.8 + 32
Going the other way: degrees Celsius = (degrees Fahrenheit − 32) ÷ 1.8
A reading of 1 degree Celsius is 33.8 degrees Fahrenheit, but a step of 1 degree Celsius is 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit — the two scales start counting from different places, which is why the formula shifts as well as scales. Both numbers in it are exact definitions, not rounded estimates.
Worked example
You have 20 degrees Celsius. Multiply by 1.8, then add 32. 20 × 1.8 + 32 = 68 °F.

Why this formula has a “+ 32” in it
Every other converter on this site multiplies by one number and stops. Temperature cannot, because the two scales do not agree about where zero is. Water freezes at 0 °C and at 32 °F — the same temperature, two different numbers — so before the scaling means anything, the 32 has to be accounted for.
The two scales also count in different sized degrees. There are 100 Celsius degrees between freezing and boiling and 180 Fahrenheit degrees across the same range, and 180 ÷ 100 is the 1.8 in the formula.
This matters when you convert a difference rather than a reading. If a room warms by 10 °C it has warmed by 18 °F, not by 50 °F. Add the 32 only when you are converting an actual temperature; leave it out when you are converting a change in temperature.
There is exactly one temperature where the two scales agree: −40 °C is −40 °F. It is in the table below, and it is a quick way to check any converter, including this one.

180 °C is 356 °F. Most ovens are marked in steps of 25 °F, so recipes usually round this to 350 °F.
Is a 1 degree Celsius change the same as 1 degree Fahrenheit?
No. A change of 1 °C is a change of 1.8 °F. The reading 1 °C is 33.8 °F, which is a different question — see the note above.
At what temperature are Celsius and Fahrenheit the same?
At −40. −40 °C is exactly -40 °F, and it is the only point where the two scales meet.
Is there a quick way to estimate this in my head?
Double the Celsius number and add 30. For 20 °C that gives 70, against a true 68 °F — close enough to know whether to take a coat, and wrong by more the further you get from everyday temperatures.
