Speed limits are not converted, they are set
A 100 km/h limit works out at about 62 mph, but no country posts 62. Limits are chosen as round numbers in whichever unit the country uses, so a converted limit tells you how fast you may go, not what the sign will say.
The two conversions worth memorising for driving: 100 km/h is roughly 60 mph, and 50 km/h is roughly 30 mph. Both are a little under the true figure, which is the safe direction to be wrong in.
A car speedometer is deliberately optimistic. Regulations in most countries allow it to read high but never low, so a converted reading may still not match your true ground speed.
Knots are a third unit again, used at sea and in the air: 1 knot is one nautical mile per hour, or 1.852 km/h exactly. A knot is not a "nautical km/h" and is never interchangeable with mph.
