To change km/h into m/s, divide by 3.6.

Before you rely on it
Divide by 3.6 — the decimal never ends
1 km/h is 1000 meters in 3600 seconds, which is 1/3.6 m/s. Dividing by 3.6 is exact, but written as a multiplier it becomes 0.2777… with the 7 repeating forever, so the factor shown above is rounded.
For mental arithmetic, divide by 3.6 or multiply by 5 and divide by 18 — the same thing. 90 km/h × 5 ÷ 18 is exactly 25 m/s. Any speed that is a multiple of 18 km/h converts to a whole number.
Physics problems usually want m/s, because it is the SI unit and works directly with meters and seconds in other formulas. Converting a car speed first avoids mixing hours and seconds in the same calculation.
At 50 km/h a car travels about 13.9 meters every second — more than three car lengths. That is the number that matters for stopping distances.
