The formula

How to convert milliliters to liters

To change milliliters into liters, divide by 1000.

liters = milliliters ÷ 1000

Going the other way: milliliters = liters × 1000

1 milliliter = 0.001 liters. This factor is the exact definition of the unit, not a rounded estimate.

Worked example

You have 750 milliliters. Divide by 1000. 750 ÷ 1000 = 0.75 L.

Before you rely on it

Divide by 1000 — only the decimal point moves

A milliliter is one thousandth of a liter; "milli" means a thousandth in every metric unit. So the conversion is exact and needs no calculator: move the decimal point three places to the left. 750 mL is 0.75 L, and 5 mL is 0.005 L.

One milliliter is exactly one cubic centimeter. Medicine and engine sizes are often given in cc — a 5 cc syringe holds 5 mL, and a 1000 cc engine is a 1-liter engine.

A liter of water weighs very close to a kilogram, so 500 mL of water is about half a kilo. That shortcut holds for water and water-like drinks only; a liter of cooking oil weighs noticeably less, and a liter of honey noticeably more.

The table includes common container sizes: 330 mL is a standard European can, 355 mL a US 12 fl oz can, 750 mL a wine bottle and 1500 mL a large water bottle.
