The international nautical mile has been defined as exactly 1852 meters since 1929. A knot is one nautical mile per hour, so 1 knot is exactly 1.852 km/h and this conversion is never rounded.
Knots are the standard at sea, in aviation and in marine forecasts, even in metric countries. A gale starts at 34 knots, about 63 km/h, and hurricane or typhoon strength at 64 knots, about 119 km/h.
Quick estimate: nearly double it. 30 knots is about 56 km/h, and doubling gives 60 — a little high, by about 8 percent.
Aircraft airspeed indicators often read in knots too. A small plane cruising at 120 knots is doing about 222 km/h through the air, which is not the same as its speed over the ground once wind is involved.
