Before you rely on it

US fluid ounces, and never weight ounces

This page uses the US fluid ounce: exactly 29.5735295625 mL, 1/128 of a US gallon. It is what "oz" means on a US drink can, a baby bottle or a measuring jug, and the factor is exact.

The UK Imperial fluid ounce is about 28.41 mL, some 4 percent smaller. A British recipe written in fluid ounces comes out slightly different if you convert it here — noticeable in baking, not in a glass of water.

An ounce on a food packet or a kitchen scale is a weight, not a volume, and has no fixed milliliter equivalent: 8 oz of honey takes up far less room than 8 oz of popcorn. For weight ounces, use ounces to grams.

US nutrition labels round further: for labelling, 1 fl oz counts as 30 mL and a cup as 240 mL. A serving size on a label may therefore differ slightly from this page. The container size is converted properly: a 12 fl oz can is marked 355 mL, the true figure rounded to the nearest milliliter.
