How to convert cups to fluid ounces

To change cups into fluid ounces, multiply by 8.

fluid ounces = cups × 8

Going the other way: cups = fluid ounces ÷ 8

1 US cup = 8 fluid ounces. This factor is the exact definition of the unit, not a rounded estimate.

Worked example

You have 3 cups. Multiply by 8. 3 × 8 = 24 fl oz.

Before you rely on it

Fluid ounces, and which cup

This page uses the US customary cup, exactly 8 US fluid ounces. Every answer is exact: multiply by 8.

Australia, New Zealand and most modern Canadian recipes use a 250 mL metric cup, about 8.45 US fl oz. US nutrition labels use a 240 mL cup, about 8.12 fl oz. Neither difference matters much in the kitchen.

A cup measures volume. "8 oz" on a bag of flour or a block of cheese is a weight, and a cup of a solid ingredient weighs whatever that ingredient weighs — not 8 oz.
