How it works

How to convert a unit here

  1. Open the converter for your pair, from the lists above.

  3. Need it the other way round? Press Swap. Need more or fewer decimal places? Change Decimals. Nothing reloads, and nothing is sent anywhere.

Common questions

Common questions about converting units

Are these conversions exact?

The factors are. Most are exact by international definition — 1 lb is exactly 0.45359237 kg, 1 in is exactly 2.54 cm, 1 mph is exactly 1.609344 km/h — and the arithmetic keeps full precision. What gets rounded is the display, to four decimal places by default, and you can change that on any page. Where a factor genuinely does not terminate, the page says so instead of implying the result is exact. The methodology page lists every factor and its source.

Why does temperature need a different formula?

Because the scales disagree about where zero is. Every other unit here shares a zero — nothing weighs zero pounds and something else — so converting is one multiplication. Water freezes at 0 °C and at 32 °F, so a temperature conversion has to shift the number as well as scale it: °F = °C × 1.8 + 32.

Can I convert milliliters to kilograms, or cups to grams?

Not with one fixed number, and it is the most common mix-up on this site. Milliliters and cups measure volume, grams and kilograms measure weight, and how much a cup weighs depends on what is in it. Water is the one people remember: a milliliter of water weighs about a gram, so a liter is about a kilogram. The same split runs through ounces — ounces to cups uses fluid ounces, and ounces to grams uses weight ounces.

Do you use US or Imperial gallons?

US liquid units by default, because they are what American recipes, cartons and fuel pumps mean. The UK Imperial gallon is larger — about 4.55 L against the US gallon’s 3.79 L — and every page that could be ambiguous says which one it uses. See liters to gallons.

Can I type a comma as the decimal point?

Yes. 1,5 is read as one and a half, the way it is written across much of Europe. Commas that group digits in threes are read as thousands separators instead, so 1,500 is fifteen hundred and 12,000,000 twelve million, as in US and UK usage. When in doubt, type a point: 1.5 is never ambiguous.

Does anything I type get sent to a server?

No. Every calculation runs in JavaScript on your own device, and the values you enter are never transmitted, logged or stored. There is no account and nothing to sign up for. The privacy policy sets out what the advertising and analytics tags do collect.

Is it free?

Yes, all 58 converters, with no limits and no sign-up. The site is paid for by advertising, which is kept below the answer rather than in front of it.
