Before you rely on it

Which tablespoon: 14.8, 15 or 20 mL?

This page uses the US customary tablespoon: exactly half a US fluid ounce, which is 14.78676478125 mL. It is the spoon in American recipes, and 16 of them fill a US cup.

The UK, Canada, New Zealand and most metric recipes use a 15 mL tablespoon, and US nutrition labels round the tablespoon to 15 mL as well. The difference from the US spoon is about 1.4 percent — far less than the difference between a level and a heaped spoon.

Australia is the exception: an Australian tablespoon is 20 mL, four teaspoons rather than three. An Australian recipe that asks for 2 tablespoons means 40 mL, not about 30.

A tablespoon is a measuring spoon, not the spoon you eat soup with. Cutlery varies widely in size, so for anything that matters — baking powder, salt, medicine — use a marked measuring spoon.
