Before you rely on it
US gallons, not Imperial
This page uses the US liquid gallon: exactly 3.785411784 liters, defined as 231 cubic inches. It is the gallon on US fuel pumps, milk jugs and paint cans, and the factor is exact.
The UK Imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 liters — about 20 percent more. Fuel economy is where this bites: a car rated in miles per Imperial gallon shows a bigger number than the same car rated per US gallon, simply because the gallon is bigger.
The US dry gallon, about 4.40 liters, is a separate and rarely used unit for produce. Nothing on this site converts it.
Drums, water heaters and aquariums in North America are rated in US gallons. A 55-gallon drum holds about 208 liters.
